Bibliometric Analysis of Dental Preprints which Published in 2022

The traditional peer-review process is a necessary step to evaluate the quality of a manuscripts before publication. Yet, it is a time-consuming process. Nowadays, preprints play an important role in speeding up and facilitating the transparent dissemination of research findings among scientists before peer-review process.[1],[2],[3] Importance of rapid sharing of life-saving discoveries during disasters and life-threatening disease outbreaks, widely acknowledged among the research community. Rapid growth of preprints sharing during COVID-19 pandemic (19,931 medRxiv and 6491 bioRxiv) has changed the pattern of science broad casting forever.[4]

However, despite a lack of specialized dental preprint server such as DenRxiv,[5] dental researchers are sharing their research outputs on general preprint servers. We aimed to analyze bibliometrics of dental preprints which were published in 2022.

On Feb 18, 2023, bibliometric data of the 2022 dental preprint were obtained from the Dimensions database and analyzed using VOSviewer (www.vosviewer.com, Leiden University’s Centre for Science and Technology Studies).

A total of 1597 records were found. The highest number of published preprints were in the Research Square [Figure 1]. At country level, China published the maximum number of preprints [Figure 1]. At institution level, the Universidade De Sao Paulo (28 preprints), the Sichuan University (24 preprints), and the Peking University (19 preprints) published the highest number of preprints.[6]

Term co-occurrence network analysis based on title and abstract of preprints showed the terms Child, Periodontitis, and Cell were the most popular terms [Figure 2]. Co-citations network analysis showed the Journal of Endodontics, the Journal of Dental Research, and the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics had the most influence on the network at the journal level.[6]

However, publication of preprints is growing fast among dental research community. Establishment of a specialized dental preprint server such as DenRxiv to improve quality check before publication of dental preprints is greatly encouraged.
